You know what, we all have to put the hours in from time to time. Skipping lunch, a late night here, a weekend there. It doesn’t really matter, right, when you need to deliver that project? No, not really. The issues start to arise when this becomes habitual, when you feel there is no alternative to working through lunch, in the evening, at a weekend. The dreaded words of just and tomorrow start to play a factor: I just need to complete this piece of work and then things will be different; I know I skipped lunch today but I’ll make sure I take time out tomorrow. These words both indicate an acknowledgment that these behaviours aren’t right, but dealing with the underlying issue(s) is being differed until later, or more realistically, never.
A good work-life balance means effectively managing your professional responsibilities alongside personal interests, health, and relationships. It’s about creating a life where work doesn’t consume all your energy and time, leaving space for what makes life meaningful outside the office. More specifically, it means being strict about not responding to your email out of hours, or even checking your email in the first place. It means respecting mealtimes and not making poor choices on the run. It means escaping from your desk and your computer, looking at distant objects, maybe even venturing outside into the daylight with friends. But most importantly it means getting some rest and some good sleep (do you know, if doctors could prescribe sleep, it would be considered a wonder drug). This can be increasingly challenging if you work from home as there is no separation between the two, no commute, no work attire, no working hours.
The repercussions of neglecting this balance are significant, including burnout, stress-related health issues, and strained personal relationships. These topics are all highly prevalent with myself and other executive coaches, as we all struggle to adapt to an always-on, 24*7 global society.
